Congregation Etz Chayim was founded in Chapel Hill in 2004 as an affordable local alternative to other synagogues in the area, with a unique collection of attributes. It is an unaffiliated, lay-led, small caring community that gathers for study; prayer, deeds of kindness and social justice consistent with Jewish values; and celebratory and social activities. Congregation Etz Chayim's membership comes from diverse Jewish and geographical backgrounds. Worship services are Reform-style; and include much discussion, singing and occasional Torah readings. Activities are oriented toward older adults rather than children. Participation and opportunities for leadership are open to everyone. Above all, Congregation Etz Chayim seeks to nurture all individuals to develop their own capacities and focus on the Jewish values most important to them. Congregation Etz Chayim's highest value is to treat with kindness and honor the capabilities of all people, and it is egalitarian in all respects.
